Global Economic History through the Circulation of Commodities and People
My research delves into the acceleration of economic globalization leading to modern society. This field encompasses various approaches, methods, and issues within economic history. I focus particularly on the production, distribution, and consumption of historical "world commodities"—such as opium, sugar, coffee, pepper, and porcelain—and the people involved with them.
My primary interest lies in the trade, distribution, and consumption patterns in Maritime Asia from the 17th to the 19th centuries, framing these activities within the broader context of globalization and the transformation of local societies. By emphasizing both global and local perspectives and their connection to contemporary society, my research and teaching integrate the insights gained from digital humanities, including Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS).
